1,000 Honors

Glad was the 68-year-old King-Emperor to do again last week something he had not done since he was 54.

Each New Year's Day, on advice of the Emperor's various Premiers, His Majesty rewards subjects of their choosing with peerages, baronetcies, knighthoods, stars, assorted ribbons. Wherever these are in brisk demand the Crown is safe enough. In 1919 Canada swung under the influence of her sturdy farmers and Liberals who scarcely love a lord. Their leader and longtime Premier, coarse & hearty Mr. William Lyon Mackenzie King, has taken the line that it is un-Canadian to lick the Royal hand for honors. Not until 1930 did Canada's pendulum swing back. When Mr. King was ousted at last by rich, pious, Conservative and lord-loving Premier Richard Bedford Bennett, the set in Canadian opinion against Royal honors was so stiff that it has taken Mr. Bennett (a personal friend of the King) nearly three years to make up his mind to chip it.

The chipping last week was cautious. George V conferred on Premier Bennett nothing, bestowed a minor knighthood on Chief Justice Joseph Matthias Tellier of King's Bench, Quebec and made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael & St. George out of Chief Justice Lyman Poore Duff of Canada's Supreme Court. To 32 Canadian women he gave the Order of the British Empire for their good and charitable works. Snapped ex-Premier King, now Leader of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition at Ottawa: "An attempt to create in Canada a social order based on titular distinctions is not only unwise and inconsiderate, but is both rash and unjust."

Out of nearly 1,000 New Year's Honors for subjects throughout the empire there was no creation above the rank of baron, lowest in the peerage. Outstanding honorees:

His Highness the Aga Khan, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah: raised to His Majesty's Privy Council. This honor to a useful Moslem was nicely balanced by conferring the same on Hindu Lawyer Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru.

Captain Anthony Eden, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs: rewarded with a thumping honor, Lord Privy Seal, but not raised to Cabinet rank, as the Lord Privy Seal usually is, lest offense be given his politically potent chief, Foreign Secretary Sir John Simon.

Sir William Morris, Bart. ("Ford of England"): upped to a barony said to have cost him a cool -L-1,000,000 in charitable gifts.

Godfrey Elton, close friend of Prime Minister MacDonald; for his propaganda work in behalf of the National Labor Party: a barony.

Osmond d'Avigdor Goldsmid; for his efforts in behalf of Zionism as chairman of the Jewish Agency: a baronetcy.

Sir William McLintock, accountant; for his labors in reorganizing Royal Mail Steam Packet Co.: upped to a baronetcy.

Commander Edgar Britten formerly of the Berengaria: knighted.

Cedric Webster Hardwicke, who played in George Bernard Shaw's The Applecart, in The Barretts of Wimpole Street, is now playing to jammed houses in The Late Christopher Bean, but who has never played in Manhattan: knighted.

John Stanhope Arkwright, author of the hymn "0 Valiant Hearts": knighted.

Engineer William Gilbert son of the Royal Scot express exhibited at Chicago's Century of Progress (TIME, May 22): the Order of the British" Empire.

Mrs. Daisy Bates for her work among Australia's almost extinct aborigines: Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
