On Ethiopia
Mohamet Koko di Korese is a 27-year-old Ethiopian who. having entered the U. S. illegally in 1926, promptly devoted himself so wholeheartedly to drunkenness, disorderly conduct and burglary that he served three terms in jail. Last January, the Department of Labor decided to deport Mohamet Koko di Korese. Since the Ethiopian Government no longer exists, it was necessary to apply to the Italian Consulate for his travel documents, thus, in effect, recognizing Italian sovereignty over Ethiopia. Last week, two Ellis Island guards tucked Mohamet Koko di Korese in a third class cabin on the Rex, booked, via Italy, to Addis Ababa.
In Washington last week, a reporter asked Secretary of State Cordell Hull whether the U. S. contemplated altering its policy of refusing officially to recognize Italy's conquest in view of the fact that, at Geneva last week, the League of Nations Council had decided to permit recognition by member nations. The Secretary's reply: "Our policy remains absolutely unchanged."
