Beyond All Expectations
Year in, year out, the Bible is the world's bestselling book. Latest proof of its enduring attraction comes from the American Bible Society, which last week announced that its own English translation of the New Testament has sold 9,300,000 copies since it was published 17 months ago. Orders are still coming in at the rate of 13,000 a day.
Published as a 35-c- paperback, a $1 plastic-covered edition and a $3.95 hard cover, the Society translation, called Good News for Modern Man, is a straightforward rendering of the Greek text in precise, simplified language. Although designed primarily for readers who have learned English as a second language, Good News has been bought in bulk lots by universities, seminaries and church groups. Sales have wildly exceeded the modest expectations of the Society, which placed an initial print order of only 150,000.
