The Hair of The Dog
By PAUL GRAY/
An American preparing to return home after an assignment in Moscow recently phoned a veterinarian about her golden retriever; the Soviet Union requires dogs to have a clean bill of health before they are allowed out. The American was told she could come in anytime. "Should we bring his rabies vaccine documents?" Not necessary, was the reply. In fact, added the vet, "We don't need the dog. Just bring a bottle of vodka." The exchange was a small sign of Soviet economic deterioration. A year ago, on the occasion of another checkup, the vet demanded a bottle of Johnnie Walker Scotch.
